During the winter of '46/47, the Bennetts fought a tough battle for survival. At one point, in the dead of winter, with no food whatsoever in the quarters, James collected all of their possessions they could possibly spare and, leaving his family in their crude shelter, went to trade their belongings for provisions. Shortly after his return, Hannah -- a new born baby when the family left England -- died of Black Cankor. The writer is not sure what that ailment is, except that it is caused by exposure to the elements, but the name alone sends chills down the spine. In bitterly cold weather, James made a makeshift casket and carried the body of the six-year-old girl through deep snow to the burial grounds two miles away. The ground was frozen solid and he was not able to dig a proper grave, or adequately cover the casket. In the nights that followed, the howling woves and coyotes must have reminded him of the skimpy burial and the inevitable spoiling of the grave by prairie carnivores.
