David graduated from Van Alstyne High School, received a Bachelor's in Elementary Education from the University of North Texas, and a Master's in Education from the University of North Texas. He worked in elementary education starting in 1973 until 2011, nearly 40 years, serving as principal at College Street Elementary School, Peters Colony Elementary School, and Hebron Valley Elementary School, as assistant principal at Delay Middle School, and teaching different grade levels at Central Elementary School, Coyote Ridge Elementary School, and Ethridge Elementary School. He loved chess and coached at multiple schools both during his time as a teacher and after retirement.
David is survived by his four children, Brandi, Allyson, Melanie, and Cameron; sons-in-law, Matt and Dayne; six grandchildren, Makenna, Garrek, Cayden, Aria, Ellis, and Sylvia; two sisters, Kathy and Jean; former wife, Carol, and former wife, Marilyn. He will be remembered as a kind-hearted man who influenced thousands of young people through his time and dedication as an educator, and as a leader in the community through his involvement with schools, scouts, and family.
David is predeceased by his parents, Helen and Harold Spence, sister Bettye Haun, brother-in-law Howard Haun, niece Gaelyn Haun Wagner, and nephew Kyle Williams.
