Ogdensburg Advance - May 16, 1895
Richville, May 13 - The death of our aged and revered friend, Rev. Gorham Cross, occurred on Friday morning, after a sickness of but three days. Rev. Cross, who has been a resident here since 1840 and was for fifty years pastor of the Congregational church, was widely known and universally respected. A man always, keen, sympathetic, with a striking personality, the place he occupied in the affections and homes of this people will not soon be filled. There are sad hearts grieving today, that were not bound to him by ties of blood and sincere mourning for the upright, stately and gracious presence who has gone home to his Master, "being old and and full of days."

Gorham Cross was born at Goffstown, NH on October 4th, 1808. The youngest of ten children he lived with his father at Goffstown and Weare until their removal to Jefferson county in 1818. Mr. Cross was converted at the age of 16 under the teachings of Chas. G. Finney. His early advantages were limited, his education having been obtained at the district schools with a short term at Gouverneur seminary. He was married Sept 13, 1831 to Sophia Murdock of Rensselaer Falls, who proved a helpmate in his church and pastoral work at Richville. Seven children were born to them, all of whom are living. The first break in the family circle was made by the death of the mother which occurred in 1873. In 1878 Mr. Cross was married to Mrs. Annie McQuaig of Ottawa, Can., and with her living happily until her death on Feb 28, 1885. His funeral will be held in the Congregational church Tuesday, Rev. T. T. Davies of Sandy Creek officiating, assisted by Revs. Rodney Day of Dekalb, and J. R. Jones of Richville. His three sons, Rev. Roselle T. Cross of York, Nebraska; Capt Judson N. and Gorham P. Cross of Minneapolis Minn, and his daughter, Mrs. Leora Benedict, who ministered to him in his old age were present at the funeral. Three of his daughters, Miss Lucy Cross, Mrs. Amelia Wilkinson and Mrs. Emma Waldron of Daytona, Florida being unavoidably absent.
