Sam Epstein Angel, 83, lifelong resident of Lake Village, passed away on Monday, August 15th, 2022.

Born January 13, 1939, to Ben Louis and Sylvia Epstein Angel, Sam was a member of the Hebrew Union Congregation in Greenville, MS, and a retired military veteran of the Arkansas Army National Guard, serving the United States Army during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Sam spent his whole life serving his community and the land that he loved. As a third generation cotton ginner and cotton farmer, Sam served as president of Epstein Land Company and Epstein Gin Company of Lake Village.

He was a commissioner for the Chicot County Rural Development Authority, the Southeast Arkansas Levee District, a director of the Bank of Lake Village, and a former president of the Southern Cotton Ginners Association. But it was Sam's nearly four decades serving as the presidentially appointed civilian member of the Mississippi River Commission that he cherished most, not only for his abiding love of the Mississippi River he grew up on, but also for all the Commission did for those who benefited from the River's bounty.

An avid hunter, Sam enjoyed the comradery as much as the sport with his children and grandchildren and longtime friends. In his spare time, Sam could often be seen riding throughout Chicot County with family or friends checking out the state of affairs in and around the cotton fields of the Delta.

He is preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Rodney Allen Angel.

In 2007, the Angel family donated the house known as Lakeport Plantation, the historic civil war landmark home, to Arkansas State University. It is now on the National Register of Historic Places and a tourist attraction for site seers and history buffs alike. It was always Sam's desire to be interred at this honored site along with so much of the Arkansas Delta's history. Services will be held at Lakeport Plantation on Wednesday, August 17, 2022, at 4:00 pm. The public is invited to attend this celebration of the life of Sam Epstein Angel.
