A native of Henry County, Va., he was a retired loom fixer for Fieldcrest-Cannon and an Army veteran of World War I.
Surviving are daughters, Mrs. Nancy B. Coleman, Mrs. Elizabeth B. Stone, Mrs. Mildred B. Adams, Mrs. Mary B. Bowman, all of Ridgeway, Va., Mrs. Louise B. Nance of Axton, Va., Mrs. Katherine B. Fisher, Mrs. Doris B. McClung, both of Eden; sons, Vurble Bateman of Roanoke, Va., Deeward Bateman of Ridgeway, Va.; sister, Mrs. Elizabeth B. Fields of Eden; brother, Drewey Bateman of Eden; 24 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren.
