Elmer married Elizabeth Mae "Lizzie" Allison, the twin sister of Edith J. Allison, who was the wife of Albert Presley Cockerel. Elizabeth and Edith, the daughters of William Allison and Elizabeth Vincent, were born May 17, 1896 in Shrewsbury, Grayson County, Kentucky. Elmer worked for the Ford Motor Company and was a member of the New Hope General Baptist Church in Sadler, Kentucky.

His wife, Elizabeth Allison Cockriel survives. / He was a member of the New Hope General Baptist Church, Sadler, Kentucky. / Survivors include one son, Damon Cockriel, Louisville, one daughter, Dorothy Reamy, Falls Church, Virginia, nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren also survive. Several nieces and nephews also survive. / Funeral services were held Thursday, October 29, 1981 at the Ellis Mayes Chapel with the Rev. Duvall Morrison officiating with interment in the Shrewsbury Cemetery.
