Colonel William J Talbott, 87, Bardstown, died Sunday, Dec 30, 2007, at the Episcopal Church Home, Louisville. He was born April 7, 1920, in Bardstown. He received his elementary education at Bethlehem Academy and was a graduate of St Joseph Preparatory School and the Unites States Military Academy at West Point. He earned his mater's degree in civil engineering from Texas A & M. He served in there wars, World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He earned 15 medals including the Legion of Merit and three Bronze Stars. He taught at West Point, took paratrooper training, studied at the Army War College in Pennsylvania, served at Harmon Air Force Base in Newfoundland, Canada, served as District Engineer for Portland, Oregon, and worked at the Pentagon. After retiring from the service in 1970, he worked for a number of public utility companies and spent sex months volunteering in Ecuador assisting with the development of a dam project. After moving back to Bardstown, he taught literacy at the Nelson County Public Library for 10 years. He was a faithful member of St Joseph Parish.

He was preceded in death by his parent J Dan and Rebecca Johnson Talbott; four brothers, Ben Johnson Talbott, Dan Talbott, Jr., John C Talbott and Charles M Talbott; and three sisters, Rebecca Stephenson, Naomi King and Ella Reynolds. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Agnes Talbott; two sons, Bill Talbott, Seattle and John Robert Talbott, Bardstown; two daughters, Madleine Talbott, Chicago and Maria Talbott-Bigham, Portland, Oregon; five grandchildren; a sister, Anne Willett, Bardstown; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial is 11 a.m. Friday at the Basilica of St Joseph Proto-Cathedral with burial in St Joseph Cemetery. The Rev. Bill Hammer will officiate. In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to St Joseph Building Fund or Nelson County Public Library. Mann and Greenwell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
