He later transferred to the Army Air Corps and the Air Force, becoming one of only six people to serve in all three branches. Roy was in commercial construction in Dallas, where he owned his own company. He moved to Houston in 1963 and later changed careers, representing a number of major sporting goods manufacturers. Roy was an avid sportsman and an excellent golfer. He once considered joining the pro tour and played with Don January, Billy and Bobby Maxwell, among others. He also worked with professionals such as Jimmy Demeret, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus and Lee Trevino. Roy made 17 holes-in-one and won several amateur tournaments.
Roy accepted Jesus as his personal savior in October 7, 1940 at Seiver Street Baptist Church in Dallas and was a member of First Baptist Church in Van.
