Roy Edward Cox, Jr. Silky passed away at his home in Hide-A-Way Lake Community on June 15, 2013, surrounded by his family. He was 85 years old. A memorial service will be held at Hilliard Funeral Home Saturday, June 22, 2013, at 2:00 pm with Rev. Mike Calhoun officiating. Family visitation will be Friday, June 21, 2013, 6:00 pm 8:00 pm at the funeral home.
Roy was born December 20, 1927 to the late Roy Edward Cox, Sr. and Mollie Ettie Autry Cox. He attended Crozier Tech High School in Dallas and enlisted in the Naval Air Corps near the end of World War II. He later transferred to the Army Air Corps and the Air Force, becoming one of only six people to serve in all three branches. He obtained a pilots license and attended Southwestern University in Georgetown and Southern Methodist University in Dallas.
Roy was in commercial construction in Dallas, where he owned his own company. He moved to Houston in 1963 and later changed careers, representing a number of major sporting goods manufacturers. Roy relocated to Tyler in 1970 and opened his own company, Roy Cox Associates, in 1980 which he ran until his retirement. Roy moved to Hide-A-Way Lake in 1991 and resided there until his passing.
Roy was an avid sportsman and an excellent golfer. He once considered joining the pro tour and played with Don January, Billy and Bobby Maxwell, among others. He also worked with professionals such as Jimmy Demeret, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus and Lee Trevino. Roy made 17 holes-in-one and won several amateur tournaments.
Roy accepted Jesus as his personal savior in October 7, 1940 at Seiver Street Baptist Church in Dallas and was a member of First Baptist Church in Van. Roy thought it ironic and sad that while children today are not allowed prayer in school he earned credit for Bible study in Dallas public schools in 1944.
In his 84th year when Roy could no longer play golf, he wrote his life story for his children and grandchildren. He finished it shortly before his 85th birthday and presented it to them at his birthday party.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister, a brother and a granddaughter, Jennifer Long. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Shelby Jean Cox, of Hide-A-Way Lake children, Claudia Rasmussen, Roy E. Cox III Connie, Barbara Long Ed, Teresa Thompson, James Cox Bonnie, Michael Holland Alecia and Karen Holland Danny 11 grandchildren 6 great-grandchildren a sister, Shirley Rodgers Ozzie 2 brothers in law, 3 sisters in law and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Hospice of East Texas or First Tee.
