Alex Abernathy, age 64, of Spartanburg, SC, died at 2:55 pm, Monday, April 20, 1959, in General Hospital after a long illness.
A native of Spartanburg County; son of Jonas Abernathy and Delia Smith Abernathy; husband of Elease Abernathy.
A member of Zion Hill Baptist Church and a retired painter.
Also survived by sons, Alonzo Abernathy, Ted Abernathy and Joseph Alex Abernathy, II (1927–1997); sister, Birdie Abernathy; half-sister, Mrs. Clem Fowler; and five grandchildren.
Services were held at 3:00 pm, Wednesday, April 22, 1959, at Caanan Baptist Church by Rev. Lewis Vehaun, Rev. Roy Howell, Rev. Arthur Brewer, and Rev. T.L. Loftis; burial in the churchyard.
