Jewell H. "J. H." Cheely of Williston died Saturday at his home following a short illness. He was 85.
Born in Mitchell, Ga., Mr. Cheely moved to Florida in 1929 and to Williston 56 years ago from Chiefland.
He owned and operated the J. H. Cheely Insurance Agency in Williston for over 30 years before retiring in 1981. An avid churchgoer, Mr. Cheely was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Williston where he served in various offices and on numerous church committees. He was a member of the Friendship Class Sunday School where he held a record of perfect attendance for 50 years. An active supporter of the Florida United Methodist Children's Home in Deltona, he also was involved in the United Methodist Men of the Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Naomi Paul of Melbourne and Faye Haas of Miami; two brothers, R. L. "Jack" Cheely of Chiefland and Frank Cheely of Bellville, Texas; and two grandchildren.
Expressions of sympathy may be made as donations to the Florida United Methodist Children's Home in his memory at P.O. Box 6299, Deltona, 32728.
