Pioneer Teacher Of Ashley Valley Dies In S. Lake

Robert L. Woodward, 82, veteran Utah school teacher, formerly of Vernal, died Saturday morning in a Salt Lake hospital of causes incident to age.

He made his home at 825 Centerville Avenue.

Mr. Woodward started his teaching career at the age of 15 after receiving his teaching certificate from the old Brigham Young Academy. His first class was 51 first graders at the Huntington, Emery County, school and he remained with the same group for three years.

He later taught for 18 years in the Ashley Valley, where Vernal is now located and also took teaching positions in the Beaver Branch of Brigham Young University. He retired from the active teaching in 1920 and moved to Salt Lake City.

Mr. Woodward, a native of Fountain Green, Sanpete County, was born February 24, 1870, a son of James and Maria Johnston Woodward. He lived there for 11 years before moving to Huntington.

In 1889, he married Annie R. Searle and after her death, he married Loretta Thompson in 1925.

His widow survives as do four daughters, Mrs. Maude Ethel Jensen, San Bernardino, California; Mrs. Marilyn Thacker, Vernal; Mrs. Roselyn Woodward, Salt Lake City and Miss Ruth Woodward, en route home from the Eastern States Mission of the Church; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the Richards Ward, 855 Garfield Avenue.

Robert Lewis Woodward, 82, a retired school teacher, died April 12, 1952 in the LDS Salt Lake Hospital due to pulmonary turberculosis. He was the son of Maria Jane (Buckley) Johnston and James Woodward. At the time of his death he was residing at 825 Coatsville in Salt Lake City, Utah.

He married Annie Rosetta Searle on April 10, 1889 in Mountain Dell, Utah. Their children: Maude Ethel Woodward and Robert Lewis Woodward Jr. She died in 1924.

He secondly married Loretta Thompson on July 3, 1925. They had three beautiful daughters. The first two were twins.
