Wife of Los Angeles Philharmonic founder William Andrews Clark, Jr., Foster was the daughter of an inn keeper and when she was a child, the family moved and settled in Butte, Montana. She met William Andrews Clark, a young lawyer at the time and son of the state Senator, who proposed to her that very night. The couple married on June 19, 1901 and Clark gave his wife a $60,000 diamond necklace as a wedding present. On December 2, 1902, Clark gave birth to a baby boy and the Senator gave the baby a million dollars and the boy became known as the ‘$1,000,000 baby.' Clark became ill from blood poisoning shortly after her son's birth and a number of physicians, some from as far away as Denver, Colorado, and nurses tended to her but she passed away in the early morning hours of New Years Day.
