Jewell Tolbert Zutaut departed this life for a new life in heaven on June 28, 2023. She was born March 26, 1927, to the late James Scott and Pearl Davis Tolbert. Her life spanned 96 years, 3 months and 2 days. She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1945. She married Grover Zutaut in 1948 and he preceded her in death in 1989.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, the last surviving original member of the Dilley Farm family, and one of the oldest and longest members of the Oak Grove Christian Church where she was a choir member for many years. She lived her entire life in the Oak Grove community area.
In addition to her husband, parents, 5 brothers and 1 sister, she was also preceded in death by 2 grandsons, Matthew Zutaut in 1986 and Andrew Zutaut in 2022. She is survived by her 3 sons, Dwight (Karen) of Peterstown, WV, Mark (Patty) and Tim of Beckley. She is also survived by grandchildren Anita (Ken) Hoch of West Africa, Jeff Zutaut of Lexington, KY, Benjamin Zutaut of Union, WV, and Makayla (Erik) Escuro of Myrtle Beach, SC, and by great grandchildren Haylee Anderson of Beckley, Natalie, Lydia and Judah Hoch of West Africa, and Kieran Escuro of Myrtle Beach. In addition are numerous nieces and nephews from both sides of her families. She also had a longtime friend, neighbor, and walking companion in Lois Price.
Visitation for Jewell will be Monday, July 3, at 11:00 with a memorial service at noon at Oak Grove Christian Church. A funeral service will be at the Oak Grove Christian Church on Friday, July 7, at 1:00. Burial will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery, adjacent to the church. Family members will serve as her pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the Oak Grove Christian Church or the Bowers Hospice house.
