Mr. Ashcroft was the last of his father Josiah E. Ashcroft's 21 children and his mother Arrilla Hamblin Ashcroft's sixth child. When he was three years old his widowed mother moved her family to Eagar, Ariz. He grew up in Eagar and graduated from Round Valley High School in 1941. He attended Utah State for a semester prior to being drafted.

He served for three years during World War II, achieving the rank of Sgt. Major. Within one month of being discharged from the Army, he was called to serve a mission in western Canada for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. At the close of his mission, he met his lovely wife Alice Thomson and they were married in 1948 in the Cardston Alberta Temple. The couple lived in Eagar and Pendleton, Oregon until finally settling in Eagar in 1972. He became active in politics, serving as councilman and mayor.

Upon retirement the couple enjoyed traveling the U.S., Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. They settled in Brownsville, Texas for a few years before returning to Arizona, choosing the warmer climate of Safford.

Mr. Ashcroft is survived by his four children, 19 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and brother D. Joy Ashcroft.
