DODDS-At Joplin, Missouri, Thursday night July 17, 1879, Mrs. Harriet L. Dodds, in the 68th year of her age.

She was born in Miami county, Ohio, May 4, 1812. Her maiden name was Dodds, she being a second cousin to Samuel Dodds, whom she afterwards married. In girlhood she moved with her father's family to Dayton, O. Here she lived until 28 years of age, when she married Allen Cullom, with whom she moved to Cincinnati. Her husband lived only about two years. One child was born of this union. In 1844 she married Samuel Dodd [sic], Esq., who at the time was living in Doddsville, this county, and who was a widower at that time. With him she came West; had been a continuous resident of McDonough from that time (1844) to her death. A step-mother [sic]--the mother of a child by a former husband, and also children by her second husband--her's [sic] was a delicate and difficult position to fill, but she did it as a true wife and mother should. Her husband, after whom Doddsville was named, a well known man throughout McDonough, died in August, 1874, in this city, the family having moved from their farm to Macomb in 1864. Since the death of her husband, Mrs. Dodds has lived in Macomb, although spending considerable of her time visiting her children (all of whom are married) at other points. Some six weeks since, she went to Kansas, to visit her daughter, and at the time of her fatal sickness, was visiting friends at Joplin, Mo. During the past season, she has suffered considerably with ague, which instead of yielding to medical treatment, returned again and again, with increased severity. Other diseases set in, and death closed her earthly career as stated as above. She was brought to this city and buried Tuesday. Funeral services by Elder Mapes. Of her family are left her step-son [sic], Webster Dodds, who resides at Doddsville, a step-daughter [sic], Mrs. Joe McLean [sic], of the same place, and her step-son [sic], William Dodds, proprietor of Dodds' livery stable, this city; also three of her own children: Mrs. Dennis, living at Cherokee, Kansas; Mrs. Eva Playter, of Girard, Kansas, and Mrs. Wheeler Wells, of this city. The deceased was a woman of Christian character and profession; was a member of the Doddsville congregation of the Presbyterian church. A busy life is ended, and her rest at its close, is peaceful.~There were no "Dodds" households counted in Miami County, Ohio, in 1820. There were several Dodds households in Miami, Montgomery County, Ohio, in 1830; none in Miami County, Ohio.

In 1850 (Oregon Township), 1855 (Littleton Township), 1860 (Littleton Township) and 1865 (Bainbridge Township), Samuel and Harriet were counted in Schuyler County, Illinois, not in McDonough County.

In an uncited obituary for Samuel, it was stated that in 1840 he moved to Dayton, Ohio. In 1840 the Samuel Dodds family was counted in Piqua, Miami County, Ohio, a city located in southwest Ohio, 27 miles north of Dayton. It is not uncommon to find better known city names in various references, especially in old biographies and obituaries. Included in the 1840 census was a female, aged 30-39.

The same obituary stated that he returned to Doddsville in 1841. If he in fact returned to Doddsville in 1841, and if he and Harriet were indeed married in 1844 (this date comes from Harriet's obituary, no Ohio marriage record found), it suggests that he made yet another trip to Ohio to marry Harriet. But if he remained in Ohio from 1840 until after he married Harriet, it's logical that his first wife died and was buried in Ohio, particularly since there is no grave marker for her in Doddsville Cemetery.

Joplin, Missouri, is located in Jasper and Newton counties in the southwestern corner of the state.
