Mary was proud to be known as everyone's grandmother. She was an eager student of the Bible and spent many hours memorizing scripture from the Bible and praying for others as a great prayer warrior. She was a faithful member and volunteer at Shenandoah Baptist Church. She volunteered in the Church office, at Roanoke Valley Christian Schools, with the seniors program, the missions program and the berevement committee. She was also known to open her home to many missionaries and guests.
In addition to her church work, Mary was an avid bowler and tennis player. She even took flying lessons and became a licensed pilot.
Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Nancy Scharf; grandsons, Andrew (Megan), Ryan (Stephanie) ; Adam (Dawn); step grandchildren, Kim (Kevin) Tyree; Ronnie (Dawn) Powers; five great grandchildren, four step great grandchildren; sister, Daisy Moore; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family offers a very special thank you to the staff at Brookdale Roanoke for the loving care and comfort they provided to "Mama Scharf".
Funeral services will be conducted 11:30 a.m. Saturday, December 22, 2018 at Simpson Funeral Home 5160 Peters Creek Road by Dr. Robert L. Alderman. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday at Simpson Funeral Home.
