Visitation will be Friday, June 30, 2023 from 12 o'clock to 1 o'clock at Summerville Baptist Church. A funeral service will begin at 1 o'clock Friday, June 30, 2023 at Summerville Baptist Church. Burial will immediately follow at Carolina Memorial Gardens.
Gladys was born January 2, 1926 in Charleston, SC, daughter of the late Avery and Cleo (Bishop) Nelson. She was a much beloved mother, grandmother, and friend and will be greatly missed. She worked at the Charleston Naval Shipyard during World War II. She loved her garden, flowers, birds, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. She was a charter member of Cooper River Baptist Church and a member of Summerville Baptist Church for over 40 years. She was a woman of deep faith and taught Sunday School for over 40 years.
She is survived by: Children: Danny Hughes (Mary) and Peter Hughes (Kay); Grandchildren: Coleman Hughes, John Hughes, Kristi Huebner (Gary); Great-Grandchildren: Drayton Huebner and Delaney Huebner. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Evelyne Brogdon and her brother, Donald Nelson.
She was blessed with many wonderful neighbors and friends that supported her in so many ways. Also, the family would like to thank the many caregivers that took such good care of her for several years.
Flowers will be accepted, or donations may be made to Summerville Baptist Church.
