Funeral services for Edgar Eugene "Gene" Ethridge, 87, of Bonham, formerly of Slaton, is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 22, 2011, at Allan Fuller Funeral Home Chapel in Wills Point, with Mr. Russell Harris officiating. Interment will follow at Rocky Point Cemetery north of Wills Point.

He passed away Wednesday afternoon, October 19, 2011, in Bonham.

Edgar Eugene was born March 10, 1924, in Fairfield, Texas, the son of Thomas Edgar Ethridge and Julia McIntyre Ethridge. He was raised in Freestone County. Gene was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during World War II. On June 1, 1949, he married Melba Jean Ham in Slaton. Gene had been employed by Western Hog & Cattle Company, service stations and cotton gins in Slaton. He enjoyed fishing, watching football and boxing. He lived in Slaton until his health failed. He moved to Amarillo where he resided at the V.A. nursing home for three years and later moved to the V.A. nursing home in Bonham where he lived for nearly six years.

Preceded in death by his parents; 6 brothers, Ray, Delton, A.C., Lindale, Andy and Reed Allen and two sisters, Faye Kemp and Helen Trusler.

Gene is survived by his wife, Melba Jean Ethridge, of Wills Point; three sons, Doyle Gene Ethridge & wife, Cheryl, of Wills Point, Eddie Dean Ethridge, of Lubbock and Steven Lynn Ethridge & wife, Debbie, of Amarillo; brother, Vernon Ethridge & wife, Toni, of San Angelo; three sisters, Jo Hood & husband, Scott, of Longview, Peggy Griffin & husband, Doc, of Carthage and Shirley Williams, of Henderson; seven grandchildren, Tabitha Upshaw & husband, Brian, of Austin, Brandon Ethridge & wife, Staci, of Wills Point, Kortni Williams & husband, Mark, of Wills Point, Beau Ethridge, of Dallas, Delana Mullins & husband, Tim, of Frisco, Cameron Ethridge, of Ft. Worth and Michael Ethridge, of Ft. Worth; twelve great-grandchildren, Brandon "Jr." Ethridge, Luke LaPrade, Austin LaPrade, Payton Williams, Makenzie Williams and Alyssa Williams, all of Wills Point, Meredith Upshaw and Will Upshaw, both of Austin, Ainsley Mullins and Jack Mullins, both of Frisco, Madison Ethridge and Ty Ethridge, both of Ft. Worth.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers: Brandon Ethridge, Beau Ethridge, Mark Williams, Charlie Gravell, Tim Mullins and Cameron Ethridge.

Honorary pallbearers: Brian Upshaw, Michael Ethridge and Keith Pearson.

Family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.

Edgar was interred at Rocky Point Cemetery, north of Wills Point on October 22, 2011. He was disinterred in March 2023 and re-interred at White Rose Cemetery in Wills Point.
