Mrs. Lillie D. Cunningham of Pughtown died in City Hospital at 2:10 a.m. today after being hit by a car as she and her husband walked home from a party. The husband, John M. Cunningham, maintenance superintendent for the West Virginia Road Commission, was injured critically. He is in "poor" condition with fractures of both legs and lacerations of the scalp. He is 73. His wife received a fractured left leg, fractured ribs and a possible skull fracture. Columbiana County Coroner Ernest R. Sturgis said she entered the hospital in severe shock and died without regaining consciousness. She was 58. The were walking south along the left side of Route 2 on their way home from a party at the Grange Hall. The accident occurred at 12:05 a.m. in front of Dawson's Grocery in Pughtown. Sheriff Dick Wright of Hancock county said the 1941 sedan was traveling south and was driven by George Wern, 23, of Pughtown. Mr. Wern, who works in The Review's Display Advertising Department, lives two doors below the Cunninghams. He told the sheriff he was returning from East Liverpool and fell asleep. Sheriff Wright is holding him temporarily at New Cumberland awaiting the coroner's inquest. The victim's body was removed to the Stuart - Turley Funeral Home in New Cumberland where arrangements are pending. Mrs. Cunningham was born in Chester, April 1, 1892, a daughter of Robert and Georgianna Allison. Besides her husband, she is survived by a son of a previous marriage, Thomas Alcock of Pittsburgh; four sisters, Mrs. Viva Hune, Miss Olive Allison, Mrs. Lucinda Oyster and Mrs. Eva Johnston, all of Chester; four brothers, Charles H. Allison of Antioch, Calif., John Allison of Darlington, Pa., Lester Allison and Floyd Allison, both of Chester, and two grandchildren.
