Merritt was born in Pittsville, Now known as Richmond, NY. Merritt married his first wife Adelia on Sept 26, 1842. She passed away in childbirth on Feb 13, 1952 in Brookfield, Wisconsin. He married his second wife, Elivra Blair, soon after in Jefferson County, Wisconsin. Together they had two sons who both die in infancy. They moved back to Middlesex, Yates County, New York, where Elivra passed in July 15, 1865. In 1867 Merritt then married Adaline Wadsworth. She passed away in 1910 at the Ontario County Hospital for the Poor.
