Joshua was the son of James Conkey and Isabel Maklem. He was born in March 1760 in Pelham, Mass according to his DAR service record. His DAR# is A024969 and he was a soldier from Massachusetts. Joshua was married to Millicent Bridge and he died in Canton in 1840.

He was a drummer with Capt. Cowden's Company in 1775 and also served at battle of Bennington, Saratoga and Monmouth. As a captain in the war of 1812, he was captured by the British and was exchanged at Halifax following which he returned to Boston.
