Mary Elizabeth Arterburn was the daughter of John Douglas and Mary Frances (Flowers) Arterburn. She married William Ellison Brooks in Monroe County, KY on July 11, 1870.

The grandparents of Mary Elizabeth Arterburn Brooks were Elzia and Elizabeth (Douglass) Arterburn, who had migrated to Monroe County, Ky. before 1850, and Joel and Elizabeth (Branch) Flowers, who migrated to Monroe County from Buckingham County, Va., about 1834. Jonathan Branch, father of Elizabeth (Branch) Flowers, also migrated to the Flippin area of Monroe County at about the same time.

William E. and Mary Elizabeth (Arterburn) Brooks first lived near Gamaliel and later bought a farm west of Flippin. The union produced nine children: Alice (Mrs. Jacob Emberton), 1871-1932; Mollie (1. Mrs. Henry Soards, 2. Mrs. Bill Jenkins), 1874-1941; Lela (Mrs. Bertie C. Downing), 1876-1974; William Monroe 1879-1958; Ulysses "Les" 1882-1948; Burley, 1885-1969; Lora (Mrs. Thomas T. Riggs), 1888-1974; Lillian (Mrs. Estis Comer), 1890-1977; and Wanie, 1895-1953.

Mary Elizabeth (Arterburn) Brooks died of pneumonia on Mar. 19, 1896. William Ellison Brooks then married Elvira McCue on Jan. 31, 1897, but three weeks later, on Feb. 19, 1897, he, too, died of pneumonia and was buried in Neal Cemetery beside Mary Elizabeth.
