He married Delphine Mae Lee and had one son.
In the 1970's he lived in Champaign County, Illinois near other siblings.
J.E. had many health problems but lived long enough to see his first grandchild.
He died on May 7, 1973 and is buried in Neal Cemetery located in Flippin, Monroe County, Kentucky. His parents and older brother Ruel Brandon "R.H." are also buried there.
