Colin's tremendous capacity to love, laugh and entertain will be carried on in his loving memory by his children, wife, family and friends.
He was raised in Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan and attended Grosse Pointe University School. He graduated from Yale University in 1970. After leaving University, Colin returned to Michigan and started a family with his former wife, Margaret Harris. He and Margaret raised their children spending summers in Tawas and in Huron Mountain, Michigan. As a caring and adoring parent, Colin imparted his sense of adventure, creativity and guidance, and as he did, encouraged each of his children to live life to the fullest. Colin was an entrepreneur and he loved to tinker in his workshop throughout his life. He administered several patents and loved to invent. In 2006, on a ski slope in Steamboat, Colorado, he met and was enamored by the love of his life, Anne Carter Speed, affectionally known as Woo. After a short courageous journey of discovery, the two were soon married. Colin moved to Louisville and embraced Woo's children and the two families grew into a rich and energetic kinship. As best friends, Colin and Woo spent 17 years together with their children and grandchildren, traveling, hosting friends, fully loving each other and their shared passions. Colin was an avid storyteller, a flavorful cook, a talented host and graceful dancer. He loved to be surrounded by people and welcomed others into his life with true friendship and joy. Colin was a lover of the outdoors, ice hockey, cycling, hiking, spending summers on Lake Superior and cultivating his garden in Louisville. He was a member of the River Valley Club and the Huron Mountain Club. Colin supported many causes that were important to him including the J. B. Speed Art Museum and the Waterfront Botanical Gardens.
Colin is survived by his wife, Woo McNaughton, children Jennifer Miller, John McNaughton (Jennifer) Elizabeth McNaughton (Patrick), John Speed Meyers (Jing) and Austin Speed Wolford (Andrew); Sisters: Marge McNaughton, and Christine Cameron (Gary); close cousins Telena Presley (Bernard), Tina Presley (Greg), Pepe Presley (Edna) and Jim Presley; grandchildren Sky and Catalynn McNaughton, Carter Zheng Meyers, Anne Parker Wolford, Shawn and Christine Taylor.
