Professional Baseball Player, and Manager. He played in the Negro Leagues during the 1940s. he was born one of five children as John Nelson Avery in Plainfield, New Jersey, on February 15, 1913. He played the position of pitcher and occasional second baseman with the Colored All-Stars of Plainfield, New Jersey, in 1936, and the Marino A.C. of Plainfield, New Jersey, from 1941 to 1942. The 5'08" and 158lbs pitcher and occasional second baseman also played for the New York Black Yankees making his professional debut with them in 1946. He continued playing with the New York Black Yankees from 1946 to 1948. His 162 Game Average consisted of 1 Plate Appearance, 14.9 Total Wins Above Replacement, 14.9 Offensive Wins Above Replacement, 0.0 Fielding Wins Above Replacement, 0.0 Pitching Wins Above Replacement, and 0.0 Positional Adjustment. Following his professional baseball career, he worked as a handyman and in gardening landscaping, and served his country by enlisting in the United States Navy during World War II on September 1, 1943. He was honorably discharged from the United States Navy on January 8, 1946. Following his military service, he returned to baseball and became the manager of the Plainfield Barons of the City Twilight Baseball League beginning in 1954. Following his baseball managerial career, he worked for the North Plainfield Board of Education in Plainfield, New Jersey, until his death. He passed away at his home in Plainfield, New Jersey, on January 10, 1977, at the age of 63. Following his death, his funeral service was held at the Mount Zion AME Church in Plainfield, New Jersey, with the Reverend T.R. Kelsey officiating. Following the funeral service, he was buried in Franklin Memorial Park in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He was married to Celia Avery who passed away in 1963.
