Maggie met her husband John on September 24, 1977, and they were married and lived in Europe until 1980. They returned to Albuquerque in 1981 and Maggie worked for Youth Development Inc. for many years. Maggie earned a master's degree in social work in 2006 from New Mexico Highlands University and later achieved her LISW.
