Mary Powell was born in about 1625 and was baptised on 24 January 1624/5, the daughter of Richard Powell, at Forest Hill in Oxfordshire. (Her name was recorded as "Marie".) She was said to be his eldest daughter. Mary Powell was the first wife of the poet John Milton. They met when he visited her father Richard in June 1642 to collect an interest payment, and were married within a month. (If they married at Forest Hill, it is not recorded in the parish register.) The marriage started unhappily, although they were sufficiently reconciled to have four children together. Mary Milton died in May 1652 after giving birth to Deborah.
