John Aaron Johnston was for a time one of the most extensive farmers in the area. He built a brick home which, in his day, was described as "one of the most complete country homes in the county, fitted up with all modern improvements and conveniences, including steam heat and hot and cold water, all over the house ... surrounded with handsome grounds ... an ideal rural home." John was also active in local matters, both civic and religious. He served several terms as a school director and also worked to improve agricultural conditions, roads, and education. As a civic leader, he was often relied upon by the community for good advice. He was an Elder in the Harbaugh Reformed Church, giving generously to its work. He was described in a "Record Herald" news article as the leading spirit in urging a new church building and standing faithfully by the work until finished. In 1893, he witnessed the charter of incorporation granted the Church by Franklin County, PA. John Aaron Johnston remained an influence for good until his death in 1933. He was also remembered in "Annals of the Harbaugh Family in America" by Rev. Henry Harbaugh and "Biographical Annals of Franklin County [PA]" by George Overcash Seilhamer.
