John Putman was indicted for murder in Cherokee Co., GA before 1871. His Brooke relatives posted his bail (or perhaps he escaped if you believe the news article below).

In a letter from his father, dated May 1871, he tells John, "I got your pistol from friends the next Sunday after you left here. I found out from Tom Alison where it was."

John's mother's parents came from Jackson Co. AL to Cherokee Co., GA for the court hearing.

John was eventually released because they could not find the murder weapon!

"On Monday morning last, on Big Coon in this county (Cherokee Co., GA), Cherokee County Sheriff B. F. McColumn, with the aid of our sheriff and other prominent citizens, arrested John Putman, who murdered a man in said county in 1865. Putman had been in prison and broken jail. McColumn was a Confederate colonel, and Putman a worthless soldier in his regiment. We are told the McColumn feels very grateful for the aid he received from our sheriff and citizens and they speak of him as emphatically a man for the times."
