Gary Martin was born May 4, 1941 in Rolla, ND to George and Ethel (Adams) Martin. He graduated from Hansboro High School in 1962. He married his best friend, Doris Fahrnkopf, on June 21, 1968. They were blessed with three children, Brenda, Jeffrey and Hollie. Gary served on various boards and was actively involved with his local fire departments over the years, but his service in the military was what he held closest to his heart.
In 1964, Gary voluntarily enlisted in the U.S. Army. After basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO, he was assigned to the 7th Army Artillery as a Howitzer gunner. Gary was stationed in Germany for two years. He was then trained in jungle warfare at Fort Sill, OK, before being deployed to Vietnam, where he served for 15 months. Gary's unit was attached to the 101st Airborne division, where he served on the DMZ and the Rockpile. He then returned to Fort Hood, TX in December 1967 and was discharged with honors. Gary later reenlisted in the National Guard and served for 17 years. His unit was activated during the Desert Storm conflict in 1990, where he served the duration of his deployment at Fort McCoy, WI. Gary was also active in the VFW, Post #8196, for several years, serving as Post Commander for many of those years.
Gary was involved in the elevator business for many years, starting out in Rock Lake, ND. He spent much of his career managing the Agate, ND elevator, and also managed elevators in Egeland, Armourdale and, eventually, the North Central Grain Cooperative in Bisbee, ND. After retiring from the elevator business, Gary enjoyed spending time in his vegetable garden, watching his cucumbers grow, and reaping the harvest from his raspberry patch, as well as tinkering in his garage on any of the multiple projects he always had going on.
His six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren were one of the greatest joys in Gary's life. He will always be remembered for his quick wit, and always had a story to tell. He enjoyed playing cards with his poker buddies, cribbage friends, kids, grandkids and anybody else he could convince to join in a game.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, George and Ethel Martin, of Rolla. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Doris, as well as his children, Brenda (Jeff) Ruggles, Jeffrey (Susan) Martin, and Hollie (Kevin) Zink.
