Pressing their search for clues, South Norfolk police last night continued their probe into the fatal beating of Claude Willard Flowers, 50, of Berkley.
Flowers, an electrician, was killed sometime Saturday night or early Sunday. He was discovered near the Virginian railway tracks on Hawthorne Ave. in South Norfolk Sunday shortly after 8 am. His skull was fractured. He died at Norfolk General Hospital yesterday.
Whether robbery motivated the beating or whether the beating came about as the result of a grudge or was inflicted during a fight, were questions pondered by police as they sought to reconstruct the crime. Personal papers were scattered about Flowers when he was found Sunday morning. He had last been seen by his family Saturday night when he went out.
He was a native of Salvo, N.C. and had resided in Berkley for 14 years.
He was the son of the late Christopher and Mrs. Selina Midgett Flowers. He was a member of St. Matthew's Catholic Church in Berkley.
Besides his wife, Mrs. Irene Louise Owens Flowers, he is survived by 5 sons: Claude W. Flowers, Jr., James O. Flowers, Joseph E. Flowers, Paul M. Flowers and Richard E. Flowers, all of Norfolk; two daughters, Mrs. Vivian Umperovitch and Mrs. Barbara Jones, both of Norfolk; three brothers, Joseph P. Flowers of Miami, Fla., George B. Flowers of Norfolk and Z.C. Flowers of Portsmouth.
The body was taken to Sykes Funeral Home in Berkley.
