Linda Louise Proctor, née Atwell, died Tuesday, May 2, 2023 in Richmond, Virginia, with her daughter, Jessica Thompson, and her beloved caregiver, Janete Diniz, by her side. She was 82.

Linda will be remembered for her dedication as a nursing caregiver and educator, her playful spirit and her devotion to her family and her pets. She was born on March 15, 1941 in Leesburg, Virginia to Charles Clayton Atwell, a brick mason, and Mary Louise Wright Atwell. Linda grew up surrounded by family, with many aunts, uncles and cousins, in the Leesburg and Loudoun County areas in Virginia.

She graduated from Annandale HS, Annandale, Va., with the Class of 1958, then graduated from Mary Washington College (now the University of Mary Washington) and the University of Virginia with a degree in Nursing, and later from the Medical College of Virginia (now Virginia Commonwealth University) with a graduate degree in Nursing Education. On Auggust 12, 1961, she married her first husband, Dr. John Robert Lacey, a physician in the U.S. Army. They spent their early years in Charlottesville, Virginia, while John was finishing Medical School, and later, were stationed with the Army in El Paso, Texas and San Francisco, California.

Some years later, she embarked upon her career in nursing education at the Medical College of Virginia (VCU), School of Nursing, as a Professor. After a long and fulfilling career, she eventually retired from the school of nursing, and then became a Nurse Practitioner and a Clinical Nurse Specialist, specializing in diabetes.

Later in life, after her retirement from her nursing career, Linda reconnected with Robert L. Proctor "Bob," a friend from her high school days at Annandale High near Springfield, Virginia where she grew up. They were married in 2007, settled in Hanover County in Virginia and shared many happy years together.

Linda loved her Poodles, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and many cats throughout the years of her life. She also enjoyed cooking, gardening and bird watching. We all counted ourselves lucky to be invited to her house for Sunday night supper! Throughout the years, she devoted her time and energy to her family, friends, nursing career and all who needed her in all these areas of her life.

She is survived by her husband, Bob; by her children, Jessica Lacey Thompson (Paul), Donald Clayton Lacey (Tammy); and by her five grandchildren. Linda's life was celebrated with a service on June 1, 2023 at Bliley's Funeral Home at 3801 Augusta Avenue in Richmond, Virginia. Afterward, a family burial was held for family and friends in northern Virginia in Leesburg, Virginia at Union Cemetery.
