Franklin was the son of Sim Robinson and Irena Mae Rogers Robinson, the 11th of 12 children. He was educated in the Terrell County School System and was a Class of 1957 graduate of George Washington Carver High School in Dawson, Georgia. After graduating, he was employed with the Littleston Company for a number of years before being employed with Firestone Manufacturers in Albany, Georgia as a Machine Mechanic until the plant closed in 1985. After the closure, he was employed with the Firestone Care Center and the K-mart Automotive Department in Albany, Georgia until his retirement. After retiring, he was employed with the Dougherty County Board of Education as a Crossing Guard for several years. He joined the St James CME Church in Terrell County, Georgia in his youth and served there for 42 years before moving his membership to Cray Chapel CME Church in Albany, Georgia. He was a member of Eureka Lodge #73 since 1970.
He was married to Carolyn Shorter Robinson in 1962, they had 3 children. He married Linda Ann Dunson Foster Robinson in 1998. He was preceded in death by 1 daughter, Daphne Joynette Robinson Bell, 1 son-in-law, Gregory Bell and 10 siblings.
