William M. Venton, 62, died suddenly Saturday afternoon at about three o'clock while working alone in the woods on his farm. He had not been feeling in his usual robust health for some time past. He had eaten a hearty dinner and gone immediately to the woods.
At his usual time of returning Mrs. Venton became alarmed and called a neighbor. Fred Cross went to the woods and found the body. HIs dog was standing vigil and would allow no one near at first. With the assistance of Mose Farmer and Arnold Simons, the body was brought to the house.
William Venton was born at Three Mile Bay, N.Y. February 7th, 1977, but spent the major part of his life in and about North Gouverneur. On August 22, 1918 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Nellie Venton, his brother's widow. About seven years ago they purchased the John Mullin farm on the Rossie-Hammond road and had lived there since.
Mr. Venton was a wonderful neighbor and will be greatly missed in the community.
Besides his wife, he leaves three stepsons, Carl Venton, of Gouverneur, Clyde of Balmat and George of North Gouverneur; three sisters, Mrs. Jane Culbertson of Antwerp, Mrs. Mabel Becker of Fowler, and Mrs. Luella Rourke of Natural Bridge.
Funeral services were held from the late home Tuesday afternoon at 2:00, the Rev. W. H. Campbell of Hammond officiating. The body was laid in the vault in Gouverneur for burial at North Gouverneur later.
