Oldest child of Capt Benjamin Merrill (Regulator hanged for treason on 19 Jun 1771) and wife, Jemima Smith Merrill, of Jersey Settlement area in Rowan County NC.

He was born in New Jersey and moved with his parents to Rowan County NC when Jersey Settlement was established.

Samuel inherited his parents' plantation at his mother death in 1802. He continued to live on and work the family's plantation after he inherited it. He was also a master weaver and he continued his work in the weaving craft at the same time. He died soon after his mother's estate was settled and is buried in the small family cemetery on the property.

He and his wife, Susannah York Merrill, had 4 children:
Benjamin Smith Merrill
Azariah Samuel Merrill (changed spelling of his surname to Merrell) 1777-1844
Sarah Merrill
Jemima Merrill

Sam Merrill is listed in the Revolutionary Army Accounts of North Carolina in the Salisbury District as one who turned in his service certificate on 13 Sep 1782 on account of a special certificate paid into the comptroller's office by John Armstrong. He received his pay in land on 22 Apr 1780. In the accounts of the United States with North Carolina in 1781, Sam Merrill was paid for provisions that he supplied to the Revolutionary Army.

Samuel and Susannah Merrill's children:
Benjamin Smith Merrell - Known as "Smith Merrell". About 1820, he and his wife and children left Rowan County NC for Jennings County IN where he got at least two land grants and died in Sep 1850.

Azariah Samuel Merrill - at some point he changed the spelling of his surname to Merrell which is shown on legal documents and on his headstone and that of his family at Jersey Baptist Church Cemetery. It is unknown why he chose to change the spelling unless he wanted to disassociate his family from his grandfather's Regulator history and death. This is odd since he lived his entire life on the estate of Capt Benjamin Merrill. Azariah married Abigail Frost and the lived on the old homeplace of Capt Benjamin Merrill where they raised 8 children.
One of their sons, David Alexander, moved to Tennessee. He fought in the Civil War and was wounded at the Battle of Peachtree Creek near Atlanta.
Another son, Ebenezer, married Miss Ann Turner and they lived on the homeplace owned by Capt Benjamin Merrill.
Another son, Jonathan, married and moved to Alabama where he had two children before his wife died. He returned to Rowan County NC and married Mary C. Wiseman and they moved to Madison County, GA where they raised a family of 8 children.
The 5th son, Benjamin Smith Merrill, married Elizabeth Leach and lived in Davie County, NC. One of Benjamin Smith's sons was a school teacher and one was a Baptist minister.

Elizabeth "Betty" Merrell 1776-1790 - She died at age 14 in Rowan County NC

Jemima Merrill - married Thomas Yarborough, a veteran of War of 1812. they lived in Rowan County NC.

Sarah "Sallie" Merrill - married John Goss and they moved from Rowan County NC to Washington County IN where they lived the restof their lives.
