Shreveport real estate broker/businessman shot and killed by his former partner, Hervey S. Little, after Van Cleve had allegedly insulted Little's new bride, Anna Laura Bond Little, who also had been courted by the newly divorced Van Cleve. Van Cleve was shot once in the heart in the lobby of the Levy Building , fell mortally wounded and then was shot four more times by Little, who stood over him as he fired. Printed accounts of Van Cleve funeral only say that his widow, Mary Evelyn Boisseau Van Cleve, had him buried in an unnamed cemetery in Scottsville, in Harrison County, Texas, where their infant daughter had been buried a few years earlier.

Court records in Caddo Parish show him married twice: to Mary Evelyn (also spelled Everlyn) Boisseau Dec. 6, 1903, and to one Yetta/Zetta Benson Alch in 1912. He and Mary Evelyn?Everlyn divorced in 1911, and he was reported to have been divorced from Yetta just prior to his 1913 slaying. Due to their shared daughter, Mary Evelyn/Everlyn was appointed as administratrix of his estate.
