Rita was born March 21, 1964, in Pottsville. She was a daughter of the late Joseph and Ann Marie (Nancy) Gallagher.
She was a retired part of the Avenues Community Center of Port Carbon.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant sister, Regina.
She was a member of the Holy Family Parish, of Minersville.
Rita had Down syndrome and was able to participate in The Special Olympics. She enjoyed coloring and board games with her 13 nieces and nephews and her late father, Joe Gallagher. She was her mother's special child.
Rita is survived by her sisters, Rose Ann Petrusky, Mary Anne McMillan (Doug), Theresa Yurkonis (Joe), Marie Reiley and Joanne Penny (David); and brothers, Thomas Gallagher (Regina) and Michael Gallagher (Karen).
Rita was always ready to participate in any activity: Wiffle Ball at the family picnic, bowling, Ceili dancing, board games or the wheelchair race at The Special Olympics.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 8, at St. Michael the Archangel Church of the Holy Family Parish in Minersville, with the Rev. Edward Connolly as celebrant. All are respectfully invited to attend a visitation from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Mahal-Ritzel Funeral Home, Minersville. Private interment will be in St. Vincent De Paul No. 2 Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Avenues Community Center, 2 Park St., Pottsville, PA 17901, or The Special Olympics, support.specialolympics.org. Mahal-Ritzel Funeral Home Inc. is entrusted with the arrangements.
