MAN FINDS WIFE DEAD ON FLOOR, GAS JETS OPEN

Note Left by Victim Established That Death Was Intentional.

A note left in a conspicuous place removed all doubt as to the circumstances surrounding the death of Mrs. Mary Drake Schwartz, 47, wife of Horton W. Schwartz, 105 East Yates Street, East Syracuse, who was found in the kitchen of her home yesterday suffocated by illuminating gas. Physical troubles were named as the cause. Her husband, a New York Central trainman, made the discovery as he returned at 4:50 o'clock yesterday afternoon from his run to Albany. He found doors to the house locked and detected a strong odor of gas. After forcing entrance he opened doors and windows to clear the fumes from the rooms. The body was found lying in front of the kitchen gas range, the oven door of which was open and three jets at the top of the range turned open. Acting Coroner Herman G. Weiskotten and Herbert Lozott, morgue superintendent, were called for an examination. They gave permission for the removal of the body to the undertaking rooms of Delaney & Hodge, East Syracuse. Schwartz told officials that his wife recently had had an operation, but was apparently recovered. He said she was in fine spirits when he left for work the previous afternoon. There had been no cause for financial worries and family difficulties, he said. The couple lived alone. They had been residents of East Syracuse for the last 23 years and owned the home in which they lived in East Yates Street. Mrs. Schwartz was well known in East Syracuse, having taken an active part in the social and religious life of the community. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and was affiliated with Chapter 44 of the Eastern Star and of the East Syracuse Auxiliary of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen. Survivors are, besides her husband, one son, Melvin M. Schwartz, secretary of the Rochester Y. M. C. A., and three brothers, Myer Drake, Elmira; Charles Drake, North Chemung, and George Drake, Binghamton. Mrs. Swartz will be buried at North Syracuse. Members and officers of Eastern Star Lodge will meet at the Masonic Temple at East Syracuse at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon. Funeral services will be conducted at East Syracuse Presbyterian Church at 2:30 o'clock.
