Don graduated from Irrigon H.S. He married Michiko (meaning "beautiful smart daughter") Ushizaki a native of Japan & a beautician in 1959 while serving in the U.S. Army for 4 years in Japan. They had three sons together - David, James and Donald Jr. Don loved fishing and hunting.
While in the Army he was assigned to working for the publication "Stars and Stripes." After the Army Don worked for many years as a machinist for the Oregonian newspaper in Portland. He then started his own company - Northwest Printing Company in SE Portland.
