Mr. Roy Chalmers Culler, 71, of 6804 Running Springs Court, Frederick, died Friday, Oct. 9, at his home after a short bout with cancer. He was married to Mary Bell Culler. They were married for 50 years. Born Sept. 18, 1927, in Boyds, he was the son of the late Ralph Edward and Olive Mumford Culler. Mr. Culler graduated from Frederick High School in 1945. He served in the U.S. Army Infantry Corps and was honorably discharged in 1946. He then began work at Camp Detrick, first as an apprentice machinist, then as a full-time apprentice electrician. Mr. Culler served a seven-month tour with the Corps of Engineers as an electrical inspector for new Army construction. In 1966, he became the first and only operating engineer responsible for utility operations at USAMRIID, the modern worldwide research center involved in infectious diseases, which opened in 1979. Mr. Culler served for 12 years under Col. Dan Crozier, as well as Col. Joseph Metzger and Col. Barquist. Retiring after 38 years, Mr. Culler pursued the protection of nature through conservation and wildlife habitats. He was affiliated with Converts Coordinators, Walnut Council, Windstar, Wildlife Habitat and was an appointed member of the Frederick County Forestry Conservancy District Board. Working closely with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, he was most recently instrumental in serving on the fund-raising committee to enhance habitat for the Ruffed Crouse Society in the Eastern Mid-Atlantic Region.
Surviving in addition to his wife are three daughters, Andi Cromwell and husband Steven of Middletown, Barbara Griffith and husband Gene of Smithsburg, and Linda Shaff and husband Richard of Old Annapolis Road. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, at Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St., Middletown. Memorial services will begin at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 16, at Zion Lutheran Church, Middletown. The Rev. Donald L. Turley, pastor, will officiate.
