A daughter of The late George Benjamin and Mary Smutko Haws. She survived by her husband Walter B. Sampson, whom she married in March of 1971; four children, Larry (Marilyn) McElroy of Shreve, Harry (Chris) McElroy of Wooster, Nancy (Gary) McComas of Wooster and Sharon (Lester) Sigler of Big Prairie; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; and a half-sister Elda Virginia Haws Ross Neglic of Massilon.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, John Calvin "Cal" McElroy Oct. 3, 1969; a daughter Connie Etzwiler; two grandchildren; two brothers; and four sisters.

She was a graduate of Perrysville High School, where she was a star player for the girls basketball team. Alma enjoyed swimming and was a member of the Wooster YMCA.

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Shreve, where she had served as Worthy Matron three times. She was a member of Ripley Church of Christ and a member of Women of the World Bible study.
