two of his great grandfathers - Barton Lovelace and William McSwain - fought in the American Revolution.
Thomas married his second cousin, Julia, who was also a descendant of William McSwain.

55th NC Infantry, Company D. Private Thomas Lovelace
Wounded on or about June 30, 1864, during the Cold Harbor campaign, near Gaines Farm in Virginia.He was shot in the back of his leg, and part of his calf muscle had to be removed. He had previously seen action in the Battles of Malvern Hill, June-August of 1862, and the Battle of Chancellorsville, in May of 1863. He served in General Heth's Division.
The 1st Regiment flag was captured at Gettysburg. It was designated War Department capture No. 75. It is at the Museum of the Confederacy, in Richmond, Virginia.
The Regiment again lost its colors, which were captured on August 19, 1864, at the Battle of Globe Tavern. This flag, which bears the honor GETTYSBURG, is in the NC Museum of History in Raleigh, NC. Its condition is rated as poor, with the border torn, and a star is missing. Its ID# is 1914.252.2
