Joyce is grandma to 17 grandchildren and 46 great-grand-children. Preceded in death by her parents and only sister, Elizabeth Mae (Harold) England. Joyce was a 2 1/2 lb. premature baby, born March 28, 1927 in Heber City, UT to Peter Floyd and Bessie Elizabeth Brown Abplanalp. Her first weeks were spent in a blanket-lined shoe box on the open oven door of a wood-burning stove. Joyce attended school in Heber City, Park City, and Duchesne. She graduated salutatorian in 1945 from Duchesne High School. She played the flute in the symphony orchestra while attending BYU. She graduated in 1962. Joyce married Lorin LaVar Kofford July 31, 1947 (later divorced). To this union was born one daughter, Lorna Joyce Kofford. Joyce married Dee "S" Mecham Aug. 15, 1978 in the Provo LDS Temple. Dee's children are: Dale (Carrie) Mecham, Darlene (Lynn) Seely, Joyce (Gaylin) Rollins, Harvey (Allie) Mecham.
Joyce was a very loving and devoted wife. She and Dee were involved in the local, state, and international Lions Club. She gave countless hours of service to the Lions Club and its humanitarian projects. She enjoyed her friends in the Heber Shakespearean Club and D.U.P. Joyce was a faithful and active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and served in various positions. Joyce began her teaching career in Tabiona, UT in 1946. Her love of learning was evident during her 32 years of teaching elementary school in Oregon and Utah (Tabiona, Duchesne, and Heber City). Joyce held many leadership positions in both state and district education, and received recognition for her exemplary teaching. Some of her greatest joys have come from meeting former students. They always expressed gratitude for her love and for teaching them how to love learning. Joyce's positive attitude has brought her through the difficult challenges she has had. Her example of love, courage, perseverance, appreciation, and patience is a great legacy to her posterity and all who know her. She is a very special "Grammie" to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Joyce was deeply grateful for loving and dedicated caregivers, and thankful for everyone who was so kind and helpful during the years of declining health.
