Early Settler Dies After A Long Illness
Funeral services for Mrs. G.W. Rector were held Monday and burial was in Newkirk Cemetery. The Rev. B.H. Lassetter of the Baptist church, conducted the services. The body was buried beside the graves of two of her sons.
Mrs. Rector died Sunday, May 18, after five or six years of poor health. She was 70 years and 9 months of age.
Minervia Jane Adams was born in Belleville, Ill. August 18, 1848. When still a child she moved with her parents to Marion, Ill., where later she was married to G.W. Rector, on September 15, 1865.
Mr. and Mrs. Rector came to Kay county at the opening of the strip, when Mr. Rector made the run. They settled on a farm two and a half miles south of Newkirk, where they lived for thirteen years. The moved to Newkirk then, where they have lived ever since.
In early childhood, Mrs. Rector was converted and became a member of the Baptist church. Although poor health prevented her from attending services the last few years of her life, she was a devoted Christian and a faithful member of the church.
Of her nine sons and four daughters, five son and two daughters survive their mother. All but two of these were present at the funeral. They were William E. Rector, of Arkansas City, John R. Rector, of Wellington, Kansas, G.C. Rector of Liberal, Kan., Rodney L. Rector, of Newkirk, Mrs. Sadie Metcalf of Caney, Kan., Frank H. Rector of Newkirk an Mrs. Josie Whipple of Idaho. Mrs. Rector is also survived by her husband.
