John was born on April 21st, 1922 and passed away on August 18th, 2013 at the age of 91.

John LaVar Atkin passed away Sunday evening, August 18, 2013 in Beaver Long Term Care facility. He was born April 21, 1922 in Beaver, Utah to Jedediah Atkin and Ettie Smith Atkin. He had two sisters, Vernetta and Ida, and one brother, Albert, all of whom are deceased. LaVar went to Belknap Elementary and then graduated from Beaver High in 1941. He helped change the letter M (for Murdock Academy) to the B on the mountain during his Junior and Senior years. LaVar was drafted to serve in the Army Air Corp in September of 1942 during WWII and was discharged in September 1945, serving most of his time in England as a carpenter. After the war ended, LaVar came home and went to work for Allen Reynolds at his Lumber Yard. He met and started dating a neighbor girl, Mildred Murdock and they were married October 10, 1946 in the St. George Temple. They had 6 children, Steven (Kathy); Wayne (deceased, Christine); Beverly Abbott (Lyman); Jeff (Carma); Dan (Sandra) and Roger (Lisa). They have 27 grandchildren, 57 ½ great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. LaVar always loved building and construction and he organized Atkin Construction. Three sons and now 2 grandsons are carrying on the company. LaVar was an active, faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served in many positions throughout his life. He loved camping and deer hunting. LaVar is preceded in death by his parents, Jedediah Atkin and Ettie Smith Atkin. His sisters, Ida Atkin and Vernetta Atkin Stones and his brother Albert Atkin and by his son Wayne Atkin and a grand-daughter Michelle Dawn Atkin. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2013 at the 3rd-4th Ward LDS Chapel on Main Street, at 11:00 A.M. Viewing times are Friday, August 23 between 6:00 and 8:00 P.M. and Saturday between 9:30 and 10:30 in the same chapel under the direction of Southern Utah Mortuary.
