Dirk worked for Trans World Airlines, retiring in San Francisco. After retirement he and his wife moved to Jacksonville, Oregon. There, in 2008, he formed the Friends of Jacksonville's Historic Cemetery, a non-profit group of volunteers who help maintain the cemetery. He was president until his death. Dirk also served for eight years on the Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries, two of those as chairman.
