Jack Cawthon Obituary

Jack Allen Cawthon, 86, passed away Thursday evening, May 5, 2011. He will be missed by all who knew him. Memorial service: 3 p.m. Saturday, May 14, at Thompson's Harveson Cole Funeral Home. Prior to the service, beginning at 2 p.m., the family will visit with friends. Memorials: Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to Happy Hill Farm, 3846 N. Highway 144, Granbury, Texas, or Cancer Care Services, 623 S. Henderson St., Fort Worth. Jack was born May 16, 1924, in Bullard to Allen and Elizabeth Cawthon. In 1941, he met his lifelong love, Dorothy Nell Chumley, in Tyler. Love and studies at the University of Texas were interrupted by World War II. He served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Manila Bay, and retired from the United States Naval Reserve with the rank of lieutenant commander. In 1948, he received his BS in aeronautical engineering and in 1949 he earned his MS in engineering mechanics from UT. Jack and Dorothy married in 1946 and enjoyed 65 wonderful years together. After a 35-year career at General Dynamics, retirement was spent with friends and family in Fort Worth and in the mountains of Colorado.

Survivors: Loving wife, Dorothy; son, Col. Dr. Michael Cawthon, D.O., and wife, Ruth; daughter, Carolyn Marks and husband, Warren Marks, M.D.; beloved grandchildren, Jim Cawthon and wife, Amy, Melanie Cawthon, Erica Ybarra and husband, Rob, Chris Cawthon, Alex Marks, Psy.D., Spencer Marks and Taylor Marks; and treasured great-grandchildren, Ally, Brady, Erin and Amelia.
