Paul James Atkins, age 75, of Spruce Pine, NC went to be with the Lord Thursday, March 21, 2013 at his residence surrounded by his loving family.
He was born July 23, 1937 in Mitchell County, NC to the late Welzie Atkins and Lucy Gardner Atkins. He was a veteran of the United States Navy. He was a Lifetime member of Estatoe Church of God where he served as Treasurer.
In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his son, Tony James Atkins; three brothers, Bernerd, Vernon and Vaughn Atkins; and one sister, Vida Carroll.
Surviving Mr. Atkins are his wife of 9 years, Peggy Thomas Atkins of the home; three daughters, Shelia Kimbrell and husband, Larry of Rock Hill, SC, Peggy Louise Atkins of Lancaster, SC and Paula Atkins of Gastonia, NC; one daughter-in-law, Joyce Atkins of Rock Hill, SC; one step-son, Charles Nanney, Jr. and wife, Tammy of Spruce Pine, NC; two step-daughters, Karen Stewart and husband, John of Spruce Pine, NC and Pam Banner and husband, Stephen of Marion, NC; one brother, Clarence Atkins and wife, Glenda of Spruce Pine, NC; one sister, Gladys Rathbone and husband, Richard of Spruce Pine, NC; a lifelong best friend, Franklin D. Forbes and wife, Lillian of Micaville, NC; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; eleven step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and his loving dachshund of 11 years, Knotty.
A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, March 22, 2013 at Estatoe Church of God with Rev. Wayne Braswell and Rev. Chris Rathbone officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
