Born to George Sanders Ashley (1791-1868) & Susana Dickens Ashley (1800-1885).

Elihu married 1) Ann Ophelia Terry (1832-1859) on Nov. 4, 1845 in Copiah County, MS.

Six children:
• Susan Elizabeth Ashley Beasley (1847-1898)
• Emma E. Ashley James (1848-1887)
• Martha Ann Ashley Page (1851-1941)
• Silvester Winnic Ashley (1853-1946)
• John Frederic Ashley (1855-1918)
• Jesse Woodall Ashley (1858-1926)

After the death of Ann in 1859 at age 27, Elihu married 2) Mrs. Delila Jane Jones Beck (1827-1903) on Mar. 31, 1862, in Copiah County, MS. This was a second marriage for both.

Three children:
• George Thomas Ashley (1863-1952)
• Sarah Catherine Ashley Ratcliff (1866-1942)
• David Gilpin Ashley (1870-1929)
