Son of William Parmer Pope and Mary Ann Strayhorn Pope; husband of Alice Amanda Newby; enlisted in the Confederate Army, Sixth Regiment, Tennessee Infantry. After a year of servie, he joined the Seventh Tennessee Calvary. He surrendered at Gainesville, Ala. at the close of the war. In 1866, he married Alice Newby who was born in Tennessee in 1847. He and Alice had four daughters and one son and were members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He resided in Jackson, beginning in 1883 and was a prosperous livery man of the firm, Pope & Blackard.
